Reed's Remember When ...

This Blog is dedicated to remembering things the way they used to be and tying them to today. Not everything in the 'good old days' were good, but a lot of things still have merit. For instance, 'Remember When a half-gallon of ice cream was actually 2 quarts vice 1.75 quarts today? What's up with that?'

Name: Reed
Location: Midwest, United States

Trying to make sense of 'today' and ensure my children grow up with the beliefs that were instilled in me. Give them the best start in life. Stress do the 'right thing, the first time, every time.'

Reed's Remember Thanksgiving

Remember family Thanksgivings? You know, where your whole family of three or more generations get together to celebrate the day the Pilgrims started? You see cousins for the first time since last year's Thanksgiving and get to eat till you're fully gorged? There was always the dish you waited all year for - pumpkin pie, grandma's dressing or homemade noodles over mashed potatoes (a southwestern Indiana thing).

Growing up we always went to my aunt's house. Everyone from my mom's side of the family would be there. From grandparents to all the grandkids there were 18 in all (the last time we were together there were over 40 with great-grandchildren). We'd eat all the standard Turkey Day fair, watch football, play games, go on a walk (if you could after eating so much), and maybe even get a game of Uno in. One thing that was always done, every year, was a prayer led by my grandfather. Every prayer included his heartfelt thanks for the food and the many blessings God had given his family. That's the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

Today I think most people still celebrate with great food and football games. But do they (and you) really remember the meaning behind Thanksgiving? God and the many things he has blessed you with? The Pilgrims went through many desperate and hard times. But they remembered what God had done for them. Take a few minutes and read "The Power of Giving Thanks".

Yesterday my wife, kids and I spent Thanksgiving with 'family' for the first time in four years. My parents drove 850 miles to spend Thanksgiving with us. It was a nice, enjoyable day with great food (fried turkey, green bean casserole, noodles on mashed potatoes, dressing and more). The best part was spending the day with my parents and my family. Three generations at the table. Something to really give thanks to God for!

But now as it is 364 days to the next Thanksgiving, remember this - every day is a day to give thanks and remember where your blessings came from. God.

Reed's Remember to say Thank-You

Do you remember to say 'Thank-You' to a veteran? Today is Veterans Day, November 11, 2005. 87 years ago on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month Germany surrendered with the implementation of an armistice - ending the The Great War. Since 1919 on November 11th we pause to remember Veterans past and present.

But I want you to go even one further. Take every opportunity you have to say Thank-You to a veteran. Whether it is your grandfather, next-door neighbor or one you meet while chatting at the airport. These men and women give us the freedom and liberty we take for granted every day.

Today there is so much discussion about the Global War on Terrorism. Should we be over there? Are we spending too much money? The President did this or that. Our military is what gives us the ability to ask these questions and NOT be jailed or killed as an 'enemy of the state.' They keep us free; do you really know what that is?

So, today and every day - say Thank-you to those who are willing to die for your right to live free! They will appreciate your kind words and heart felt thanks.
